The Karate Kid

What Jack says...

I don't think I really need to go into what this movie is about because everyone on the planet has seen this movie at least a dozen times except for me. I can't believe that is has been over two decades and I had never seen The Karate Kid until last night.

This movie was entertaining and it certainly was a good family film. I don't know how much kids now would like it though. There weren't any loud explosions or retarded american anime characters making stupid faces to keep kids attention. This just goes to show we used to have more of an imagination when we were kids. Yes, I know I sound like my parents.

Why does Elizabeth Shue look old even when she is young? She has this whole Anegela Lansbury thing going on. That chick never looked young even when she was. I'm very perplexed.

This movie was entertaining and it had a good script. Unfortunately, I did grow up with Side Kicks and I still like that one better. I love you Jonathan Brandis. RIP

I give this one a 6.5

The Graduate

What Jack says....

The Graduate stars Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. It is the tale of a young man (Hoffman) who has just graduated College that is propositioned by an older woman(Bancroft) for sex. Once he is in a full fledged romance with this woman he is forced to go on a date with her daughter and ends up falling for her.

I have been wanting to see this movie for a really long time and I am extremely excited that I now have. I never thought that I would say this but, Dustin Hoffman was sort of sexy at some point in his life. I kind of think of him as a creepy twitchy little hobbit, but he wasn't bad in this movie. He has that sort of awkwardness that might apeal to some women. He is certainly a "Project" sort of a guy. Dustin Hoffman really is a great actor and this film was a great platform for him to start off on.

Anne Bancroft wasn't a bad looking woman either. Of course she was still older in this movie, but she had a pretty good body. The great thing about this movie is the sexual tension is magnificent because it is about what you don't see. It is rare to find a movie that doesn't just flash the nudity from the get go anymore.

In the end I thought that this movie was humorous, sweet, compulsive and just all around fantastic. There is no question in my mind why this movie is a classic.

Inglourious Basterds

What Jack says....

This movie stars Christoph Waltz, Melanie Laurent, Brad Pitt and Diane Kruger. It is the fictional tale of the demise of Hitler's Third Reich and the people who take it down.

OK, so I know that I am finally getting around to seeing this and I should have seen it a year ago. Now that so much time has passed, there has been so much hype and I hate to say I am a tad disappointed. I tend to do this where I wait and wait for something and I build it up to be more then it really is.

As most Tarantino movies go it was slow getting started and it drug in the middle. I know that he is some sort of writer/director genius, but sometimes I have trouble seeing it. I will say that Christoph Waltz was phenomenal and he completely deserved his Oscar. He was seriously wow. Brad Pitt had all the good lines and that is fitting for him. I liked how it ended and it left me wishing that is how it all really went down in history.

This was not my most favorite Tarantino movie, but it wasn't my least favorite either. You done good Tarantino and keep up the good work.

Only You

What Jack says....

Only You stars Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr. and Bonnie Hunt. It is the story of a woman (Tomei) who is about to get married when she gets a phone call from the man of her dreams. At least she thinks he is and she follows him all the way to Italy. Along the way she meets a charming shoe rep (Downey Jr.) that falls head over heels in love with her.

I have seen this movie more times then I can count, but I never get sick of it. How hot was Robert Downey Jr. in 1994? I mean seriously. I know he was blitzed out if his mind in 1994, but I really don't care because he is so hot. He is still hot! That is a little infuriating that he can only get more sexy as he gets older.

Marisa Tomei is everything you expect her to be in a romantic leading roll. She is sexy and sweet but still a little flaky. She is great and I want her to be in every movie. She is another person that has gotten hotter as she got older. What is up with that?

Bonnie Hunt was still funny when this movie came out. That dates it big time. Bonnie Hunt has not gotten hotter. Sorry, Bonnie.
I give this one an 8.5. I could watch it almost everyday.

Oliver!

What Jack Says....

Olvier! is the story of a little orphan boy who runs away from the orphanage he grew up in and hooks up with a an older man who runs a group of throw away boys. He takes care of them in return for them pick pocketing for him. There is another whole side plot but honestly I checked out.

This movie was a little piece of torture! I was forced to watch it and I think that it should be used as punishment. This movie was about 2 hours too long and oh baby Jesus it was boring.

I really have nothing good to say about this one so I guess I should just stop. I would rather go to the OBGYN instead of watching this again.

I give this one a 1. If I could have shut it off I would have.

The Maltese Falcon

What Jack Says...

The Maltese Falcon stars Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor. It is the story of a detective who's partner is killed following a case that a woman (Astor) hires them to investigate. The plot thickens as Sam Spade (Bogart) finds out that this woman is not what she seems and she wants something he can't find.

This was the first movie I had to watch for my screenwriting class. I won't say that I loved it, but I didn't hate it either. I love the classics and I love black and white movies, but I was not totally feeling this one. It might have been because I had to write a paper on it and I really didn't get time to enjoy it because I was so worried about hitting all my points.

This is the first movie I have seen with Humphrey Bogart and I was not impressed. There are generations of people rolling over in their graves right now having said that. I am sure I will see more movies with him in it and I hope they change my mind, but I really don't see what all the hub bub is about.

I give this one a 4

The Pajama Game

What Jack says.....

The Pajama Game stars Doris Day and John Raitt. It is the story of two people who fall in love that work in a pajama factory. They are on opposite sides of a union strike and that creates a rift.

This was another of my instant Netflix views and this one was less shitty then some I have seen. I really love Doris Day and I figured I would give it a shot. I was not a huge fan of this movie and I am not really sure why. The songs were good enough and there were some good Fosse choregraphed dance numbers, but it sort of fell flat. Doris was way too skinny and her hair was way way bad in this one. It was like a really big Elvis do and only Elvis could pull that off. I think she just looked overworked in this flick. Her leading male wasn't anything really special and I didn't really pick up on their chemistry. Well, I lied then. I guess I do know why I am not a huge fan.

Drop Dead Fred

What Jack Says.....

I don't care what anyone says, this is the best comedy ever! Seriously, it is one of my all time favorites. I know that this movie is from 1991, but I watched it recently anyway. This is how comedy should be done.

Rik Mayall was so amazing in this movie, that I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that he never made it big in America. He was HUGE in England, because they know what comedy really is.

If you haven't watched this movie then you need to because it will complete your life. Yes, complete it.

I give this one a 9.5

Management

What Jack says....

Ok, so I have NetFlix now so it gives you movies you can watch instantly. What I am slowly beginning to learn is that if you can watch it instantly then it isn't worth a damn.

Management stars Steve Zahn and Jennifer Aniston. It is the story of a man (Zahn) who's family owns a Motel in what is supposed to be Kingman, but it isn't. It was a little too clean to be Kingman. A traveling sales woman (Aniston)visits the hotel and has a one night stand with (Zahn).

Now I beg to ask the question; Is it a one night stand if they do it during the day. Think about it? Anyway, he falls head over heels for her and follows her all over the country and she just really isn't into him.

I was in trouble from the get go with this one because I am a total sucker for both of them. Now, I won't say that this was a good movie, but I will say that it had some good stuff. This was Zahn's first attempt at being the romantic lead and he didn't crash and burn so that is good. I love Jennifer Aniston and I love when she plays the uptight rolls, but it almost comes off like she isn't acting at all. I feel that is is the way she is in real life. She should have let John Mayer continue banging her because she needs to loosen up.

I told Hari that this one is only worth watching if she stumbles on it. It isn't worth recording or even searching for on NetFlix.

I give this one a very shaky 5

(500) Days of Summer

What Jack Says....

(500)Days of Summer is a story about a young man (Levitt) who thinks back on his prior relationship with the girl he believes was the girl of his dreams(Deschanel). He is trying to figure out what went wrong, when it went wrong, and why it happened to him.

When I heard that my long time boyfriend Joseph Gordon-Levitt was going to do a movie with my long time girlfriend Zooey Deschanel I was thrilled. My bubble was slightly burst when I heard a few people say that this movie was just so so.

I will say that I really enjoyed this movie. I won't go into detail, but I will say I laughed, I cried, and it hit slightly too close to home. Good job guys.

I give this one an 8
What Hari Says...

Dear lord.  I cannot explain how much Zooey Deschanel annoys me.  Even spelling her freaking name was fucking annoying.  OMG!  That was ridiculous.  The only reason I watched this film was for Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

AHHHHHHH!!!!!

He is so incredibly awesome.  However, I was still super annoyed by Zooey and he was kinda wimpy and I wanted him to just the fuck over her already.  I guess I just didn't get it.

I give it a 2.  And I totally feel like Elaine with the English Patient.  It was annoying and long and somewhat painful.  It got a 2 cuz JGL is just precious.

The Invention of Lying

The Invention of Lying stars Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner. It is the story of a group of a world where no one can tell a lie and everyone is completely honest about everything. A man (Gervais) finds a way to lie to everyone and no one suspects a thing.

I really wanted to see this movie when it was in the theatre, but now that I have seen it I am glad I didn't actually pay for it. I was extremely disappointed in this flick. The trailers made this movie out to be pretty funny, but unfortunately anything that had even a morsel of humor in it was in the trailer.

Jennifer Garner plays the beautiful and painfully honest female role. I guess she fits the part, but I really didn't find her all that beautiful in this movie. I think her hair was all wrong and her clothes were old and doughty. I guess she played the character just about as well as you would expect her to. Has she ever really wowed anyone with her performance?

I love Ricky Gervais and he can do no wrong with me. This movie won't change my opinion of him in the least. Let's just hope that next time he hits the nail on the head.

I give this one a 3

What Hari Says...

I agree with Jack.  I'm so glad I didn't pay money to see this in the theater.  And I don't know what the hell happened, cuz I LOVE Ricky Gervais HARD!  I would so hit that.  He should just be guaranteed funny, but so not for this one.

I'd give it a 3 as well.  Hmmmm.... nope.... didn't work...

Love N' Dancing

Love N'Dancing stars Amy Smart, Tom Malloy and Billy Zane. This is the story of a deaf former swing dancing champion who decides to compete in the nationals with one of his students (Smart).

I originally only recorded this movie because Billy Zane is in it. I love seeing how much of a train wreck he can be from picture to picture. I don't know how it is possible, but he somehow picks worse and worse films each year. I guess hollywood isn't knocking down his door. Unfortunately, Billy isn't really in it all that much. He has gained a little weight and I will say it looks good on him. There is a scene where he wears a really nice suit and and little pimp hat and he looks quite sexy.

Amy Smart has a rockin' bod, but I still think of her as funny and not so much sexy. It appears that she had to do a good portion of her own dance moves for this movie and it was good. I am a total sucker for dance movies so this one had my number.

The movie wasn't great, but I don't feel like it was a total waste of my time. I have 56% of my DVR full of movies right now and I don't feel bad that I chose this one over the rest.

Oh, and Tom Malloy is sort of grody. He has this weird patchy beard thing going on that make his face not make any sense. I didn't find him sexy at all. They should recast him and do the movie again.

I give this one a 6

Xanadu

Xanadu stars Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. I know I know, this movie is from 1980, but it is the first time I have seen it. I also know how much shit this movie has gotten over the past decades and that I am supposed to hate it. I am pleased to say that I do not. Yes, it was cheesy and yes it really made no sense, but I think there is a little something for everyone in this flick.

Between the roller skating, the crazy skirts that are all slit up the sides, and the musical numbers, it makes this movie a ton of fun. Come on who doesn't love Olivia Newton-John. I mean seriously.

This movie was also choreographed by the Kenny Ortega. Anyone who can bring us such greatness as High School Musical had to start somewhere. Loved it!
